HABS, HAER, HALS documentation | ||
Photographic requirements for Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) are complicated and involved, but I enjoy the process. A large format field or view camera with a negative size of at least 4x5 inches is needed. Each shot must be perspective-corrected in the camera; no Photoshop allowed! Specific archival processing and printing requirements, and negative labeling standards must be followed. I do all my own processing and printing, so I know everything is done correctly. A large camera and heavy tripod can make documenting large sites, such as Kansas City's Bannister Federal Complex, slow work. I try to optimize my efforts by shooting all I can when the lighting is right, and not waste time and money re-shooting because of poor results. I find it rewarding, and historically important work.
