Perfect weather! Well, not really, but good enough to spend an hour outside putting the carb and starter in. Big problem! The new carb is much larger than the old one and the petcock on the gas tank doesn't clear it. I also found out that the tank is full of rust and crud; the likely source of the previous carb's malfunction. I'm going to need a new petcock at least. Maybe even a new gas tank.

After trips to Wayne's Cycles for a $5 mini petcock, Westlake Hardware for a series of brass fittings, and Bear's for a fuel filter, I had a work-around for the new carb problem. I flushed the tank with acetone to clean out the crud and filled it with fresh premium. Installed the new fuel lines and filter, and rebuilt starter. Got fuel to the carb with no gas leaks. So far, so good. Put in the battery, switched it on and started cranking.

Only it wouldn't crank. It just went "ZZZIIIINNNNGGG." It sounded like the starter was slipping, or the starter soleniod wasn't engaging. Now what?! Well time's up for this day. I'll have to wait for another warm day to remove the primary cover and see what's going on in there.
