Not much hands-on work has happened with the bike lately, but there's still a lot going on. Today I received the air cleaner I bought last week on eBay. (Yes, this is turning out to be a nearly 100% eBay bike!) It's a Dragtron II from Drag Specialties. This is one of their earlier revisions, but is small and lightweight; important since there won't be any additional support for the carb and air cleaner as there would on a newer bike. This is also a fairly inexpensive unit, even more so since it's sort of used (barely). Some air cleaners for Harley run into several hundred dollars! It took a while to find one that wasn't HUGE. Everything built for modern Harley carbs seems to be SUV-sized!
I put it on to be sure everything would fit; it's not installed yet. Still, it looks great on the bike!
Yesterday I picked up another essential Ironhead Sportster accessory: A trailer! I'm "borrowing" it from my Dad, but I don't think he wants it back. He doesn't have anything to tow it with these days and things have been getting tighter in his garage. If he ever needs it again he'll need my truck too, so it may as well stay with me from now on. It's pretty small with a 4x8-foot flatbed, but perfect for towing a bike. Lightweight, too, and easy to store. It's going to get a lot of use.
Whether I have the starter Bendix replaced at a repair shop or do it myself, I'm going to HAVE to tow the bike to a State Inspection Station soon. In order to re-title an out-of-state vehicle in Missouri it must at least have an IDOD inspection to certify that the VIN and odometer reading matches the title. I didn't know this, so now I'm already into the penalty phase of DMV registration. I have to have this done in the next two weeks or the fines increase. This is why people hate the DMV.
