The big news this week is . . I've taken the bike on it's maiden voyage! In fact, I rode it twice last week! Both times were for less than a mile, just enough to run through all the gears a couple of times and see how it runs under a load. In all, it works pretty well. No transmission problems at least. It handled kinda squirrely, but when I checked tire pressures AFTER riding it (stupid) I found the rear tire had less than 10lbs in it. Also the motor sputters and coughs a bit at steady throttle, but for now I'm attributing that to the fact that I didn't clean out the new gas tank before using it (again, stupid).

Low end torque is really nice. High end is pretty poor, but I expected that. I'm also used to Jap bikes that have most of their torque in the upper RPM range, so the Harley feels kinda backward. It's more of a stump-puller than a speed demon.

I thought I'd have no problem adapting to a right side shifter since it's been about 8 years since I rode anything, but I found I was still hunting around for the shifter with my left foot. That'll take some getting used to, I guess. The lack of any gauges whatsoever is both liberating and confusing. It's a clean look, but I don't have a real handle on how fast I'm going. Something else to get used to. I've added view mirror, as you can see. With no turn blinkers I need to know if there's somebody behind me who could benefit from a hand signal.

I finished the side-mount tail light and installed it. I really like it! I'm still up in the air about the rear fender, though. I like the look of NO fender at all, but I need some measure of protection for the wires and switches behind the battery, not to mention my back. I still thinking about cutting up an old tire and mounting it just beyond the seat and down behind the battery. It'll flex if the swing arm flexes, and it won't rattle. Plus, it's already black! We'll see . .

Aside from the fender issue, I need to flush and refill the forks with oil and paint the remaining red parts black. I have to build a bike jack to take the front wheel off before I can do that though, so first things first. I'm also going to actually use a timing light to time it instead of doing it by ear (which served me well with the old Bug but isn't working too good with this bike).

Inspection and licensing are now VERY close!
